Katie Lynch, 2001Katie Lynch was born just 13 inches long and 4 pounds, 13 ounces. Doctors were stumped; they couldn't diagnose her and their initial prognosis was an early death. Finally, they said Katie was . . . unique.
They had no idea how right they were.
Born with a form of dwarfism--so rare it's still unnamed--and a connective tissue disorder, Katie led a full life as a Children's Hospital employee, motivational speaker, and activist for the physically challenged. Her motto fit so well: parva sed potens--small but powerful. Katie died October 24, 2002 after surgery for a brain aneurysm. She was 27.
Katie will be remembered for her boundless energy--whether she was advocating for patients' rights at Children's Center for Families, skiing--with aid of special equipment, or rooting for the Red Sox. Although her disabilities left her in a wheelchair most of her life, Katie met life's milestones with a flourish. She even walked 26.2 feet for her own Boston Marathon®, raising more than $20,000 Children's Hospital.
Children's Hospital honors Katie's memory with the Katie Lynch Award. Boston team members and patient families can nominate a 2007 team member. The nominee:
- Must exude a positive spirit and a love for life which elevates the individual beyond his or her own concerns and gives him or her the motivation to focus on the needs and cares of others.
- Must have an optimistic attitude, devotion to team and an unyielding determination
